Broadway Joe
Good Day To You,
In 1969 the New York Jets of the American Football League were playing in the Super Bowl. They were facing the returning Super Bowl champs the Baltimore Colts with their Hall of Fame quarterback, Johnny Unitas. The Colts were highly favored to win by a margin of 18 points. Just a couple days before the Super Bowl match the quarterback of the New York Jets, Joe Namath, made a bold and audacious statement about how the Jets would win the upcoming Super Bowl: “I guarantee it!” Namath's prediction was considered cocky by many, and outright absurd by others. The Jets ended up winning the game 16-7, and Namath was named MVP, leading his team with 208 yards of passing and no interceptions. Broadway Joe made a bold statement that day, and he backed it up.
And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19
Jesus is making a bold and seemingly audacious statement here in the gospel of Luke. He is changing the multi century tradition of the people of God and their faith in the custom of the Passover to refer to himself. ‘‘Do this in remembrance of Me” This is either the height of hubris, delusional, or the truth, that Jesus Christ is now, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. Jesus has made previous statements that he is the bread of life, that he is the way, the truth, and the life. And we know from the very lives forgiven, history altered, the transformation of millions, that he backed it up! Jesus is not a man that he should lie, neither the son of man that he should repent. He has accomplished what was promised and fulfilled all that was necessary for you to have life and have it more abundantly and for eternity. Jesus Christ says to you and me today: “I guarantee it!” What he has started in you he will complete.
Q: What promise has he spoken to you that you need to freshly recall and realize today that what he said he will do?
