Cracked Pots
There is a type of art that takes the broken pieces of pottery and then mending the vessel for use again. This art form is called Kintsugi, and the “glue” used to put the pottery back together is gold. The art is a metaphor for embracing brokenness and even failures and to see that they have value. One artist stated, “You won't realize your full potential until you go through the tough times.” Some of you might be thinking when reading this, “Well you don’t want to see my scattered bowl, cause it’s not pretty. Just pieces.”
And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. Phil. 1:6
Here is the promise of your father that he is at work in your life bringing about a complete work in you. His desire and goal is to make your life whole with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Think about this: The more broken due to your past, or cracked from the strains of life, or shattered through grief or sorrow, then more gold is needed to repair and the vessel’s value is increased.
Where does your eye focus? Is it not primarily on the beauty of the welding of gold and clay together? Our attraction comes from the healing grace of Jesus revealed. What is missing is the clay of the pottery which is replaced by gold. You may be missing some of the “clay” of your humanity, but through the process of pain, trial and loss the infusion of the beauty of Christ is found. We all are cracked pots, and each follower of Jesus reveals patterns that show the grace of his handy work.
